Lighthouse Immersive has launched “Immersive Frida Kahlo,” an exhibit dedicated to exploring the life and art of the influential Mexican artist.

To celebrate the exhibit’s Los Angeles launch, we spoke to Mara R. Kahlo (granddaughter of Cristina Kahlo, Frida Kahlo’s sister), along with her daughter Mara De Anda about their work bringing to life this latest exhibit in honor of their aunt.

Frida Kahlo was a 20th-century Mexican artist who advocated and became a symbol of empowerment, global consciousness, freedom of artistic expression, love of Mexico, and creating a more equal and just society.

Interview with Mara R. Kahlo and Mara De Anda

When we spoke to Mara R. Kahlo and her daughter Mara de Anda, they revealed what an emotional and overwhelming experience this exhibition has been. The exhibition not only showcases their great-aunt’s work but on display are intimate family memories and photographs. These images tell the story of who Frida was as a woman as well as an artist.

“I’ve always felt very proud of being Frida’s great-niece,” said Mara R. Kahlo, daughter of Frida’s only niece and president of Fundación Familia Kahlo, “but it is also a great responsibility. I have dedicated my life to protecting her image and my family’s legacy. And we are confident that the Immersive Frida Kahlo exhibit is in-line with this legacy and is proud to partner with them to further the appreciation of Frida Kahlo’s work and legacy, and also raise funds that will support causes important to her and us.”

Mara’s daughter, Mara De Anda, will also be available as a spokesperson for Fundación Familia Kahlo.

“The work that Frida Kahlo’s living relatives do to carry on the legacy of their ancestor is inspirational and we are proud to be a part of it,” said Svetlana Dvoretsky, producer of Immersive Frida Kahlo and co-founder of Lighthouse Immersive, the parent company of the Lighthouse ArtSpace venues in the United States and Canada. “Frida Kahlo is iconic in so many ways and is a role model for so many. We are ecstatic that her family sees the Immersive Frida Kahlo exhibit as a compliment to her legacy, has always been our primary goal to celebrate this remarkable woman and grow the appreciation of her powerful, highly personal work and life.”

About Immersive Frida Kahlo

After recent work on the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit, Lighthouse Immersive set their sights on influential artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). The beloved 20th-century Mexican artist was best known for compelling self-portraits and radiant pieces inspired by her life in her native country of Mexico.

The Immersive Frida Kahlo exhibition will feature some of the artist’s best-known works “brought to life” by the world-renowned master of digital art, Italy’s Massimiliano Siccardi, again accompanied by composer Luca Longobaridi’s resonant score.

Tickets to this event start at $39.99 ($24.99 for children 16 or younger). Tickets will be available at immersive-frida.com.
