We have our first details regarding the upcoming Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game. The roleplaying game is based on the popular Dark Souls video game franchise. It is being developed by Steamforged Games and will use the Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition rules. Pre-orders for the game will begin in February.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE GAME
While the game will utilize the D&D 5e rules, players will find a few changes in Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game. Several custom character classes have been built for the game, along with implementing a new magic system. Also, a brand new bestiary is included which features creatures from the Dark Souls video game series. Steamforged Games also has given us a look at some of the beautiful art for the book.
This is the third game for Steamforged based on the Dark Souls franchise. They previously released Dark Souls: The Board Game and Dark Souls: The Card Game. In the official press release, Mat Harken, Creative Director at Steamforged had this to say:
“To say we’re thrilled about the Dark Souls roleplaying game would be an understatement. Dark Souls has been a key IP for Steamforged from the beginning, and one very close to our hearts, so to finally bring Dark Souls to the tabletop as a roleplaying game is hugely exciting both for us and for the fans.
We wanted to capture the spark of the video games and deliver a roleplaying experience that would give players the real Dark Souls feel, whether they’re rolling a unique character from one of the bespoke classes, creeping through the ruins of Lothric and encountering familiar characters, or engaging in tactical combat against an iconic video game enemy. “With the passion of our team and the writing of our lead RPG writer, ENNIE-nominee Richard August, we’re confident we’ve done just that. We can’t wait for players to get their hands on this game and experience roleplaying like never before. One thing’s for sure: Prepare To Die.”

WHAT IS DARK SOULS?
For those unfamiliar, Dark Souls is a hit video game series from Bandai Namco. The video game contains both exploration and survival elements, which will likely be key components to the roleplaying game adaptation. Players in the video game take control of an undead warrior and are able to switch between undead and human forms. It is unknown if this will feature in the roleplaying game, but it would seem a likely inclusion for Steamforge to include.
