It’s 1987. No, 1988. It’s… the late 80s, and it’s Christmas. So how far would you go to get your hands on the NES?

In 8-Bit Christmas, a group of kids will do whatever it takes to grab the latest and greatest in gaming: the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Check out the trailer for the holiday comedy below:

Honestly, this trailer is a blast from the past. It manages to be nostalgic and fun, without feeling like it’s working too hard at it. As a holiday comedy about a kid who would do anything for a specific gift, 8-Bit Christmas will draw obvious comparisons to A Christmas Story. But the 80s suburban Chicago vibe and the way the storytelling structure flashes from present to past also reminds me of The Princess Bride

The trailer got quite a few laughs out of me too, which never hurts. Overall, this definitely feels like a movie that I would sit down and watch with my family during the holiday season.

Here’s the official synopsis of 8-Bit Christmas:

A humorous and heartfelt look back at the adventures of childhood. Set in suburban Chicago in the late 1980s, the story centers on ten-year-old Jake Doyle’s (Winslow Fegley) herculean quest to get the latest and greatest video game system for Christmas.

The film comes from director Michael Dowse. Kevin Jakubowski wrote the original novel, which he then adapted into the movie. It stars Neil Patrick Harris, Winslow Fegley, June Diane Raphael, and Steve Zahn.

8-Bit Christmas premieres exclusively on HBO Max November 24.
