Are you looking for new releases in Film or Television to watch this weekend of August 27th!? Well, That Hashtag Show has you covered in our weekly series! So, make sure to come back each week as we compile all of our recommendations for you to check out on your days off. Usually the last weekend of August is a dumping ground for films studios have no faith in. But, surprisingly we have two solid movies and one that might be a guilty pleasure for fans of 90’s rom-coms. We also have some fun television releases, too! So, let’s get into it!
NEW RELEASE: FILMS
CANDYMAN (ONLY IN THEATERS)
Nia DaCosta’s “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 horror film of the same name, has been getting rave reviews from critics. This long-delayed movie has been said to add on the original, even though seeing the first is not completely necessary. The trailers garnered a lot of buzz and this looks to be a big hit this weekend (as it should be). That Hashtag Show’s own Jessica Lancaster said, “It’s skin-crawling, emotionally impactful, and beautifully shot – a must-watch.” [See our Full Review Here!]
VACATION FRIENDS (HULU)
The very blandly titled Vacation Friends has been through development hell and has gone through a slew of writers. So, you couldn’t blame me for thinking this one was going to be a hard pass. But, reviews out for this raunchy R-Rated Comedy starring John Cena and Lil Rel Howery have been surprisingly positive. Some even saying its the funniest comedy of the year so far. That Hashtag Show’s own Hunter Bolding says, “Vacation Friends isn’t the perfect comedy, but it’s one that’ll definitely give you plenty of laughs.” If you have Hulu and are in need for some lighthearted fun, sounds like you can’t go wrong with Vacation Friends. HE’S ALL THAT (NETFLIX)
Yes… it is a gender-swapped version of the 1999 romantic comedy She’s All That. And while critics have pretty much lambasted this new reiteration starring TikTok star Addison Rae and Cobra Kai’s Tanner Buchanan… It also has original stars Matthew Lillard and Rachael Leigh Cook, from the same writer and is directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday). So, if you liked She’s All That and are in need a burst of nostalgia this weekend, this might do the trick.
NEW RELEASE: TV
CLICKBAIT (NETFLIX)
This new mystery thriller from Netflix has already hit the Top 10 and has everyone talking! A man is kidnapped and is put on a livestream that says he will be killed if the video hits 5 million views. The series then follows the aftermath through the perspectives of everyone involved in the case. I can personally say that this show is absolutely gripping and worth a binge-watch, even though critics haven’t been the kindest to it. Don’t look for Emmy-winning acting or writing, just enjoy the wild ride!
All episodes are streaming now on Netflix.
AMERICAN HORROR STORY: DOUBLE FEATURE (FX ON HULU)
The landmark tenth season of this groundbreaking show, has decided to go a different route and split the season up in two different stories. Part 1 consists of 6 episodes and is titled Red Tide and takes place near the sea. Part 2 titled Death Valley consists of 4 episodes and takes place near the sand. I think this was a brilliant idea to split the season up into two parts because we all know that this show can contain some pretty unnecessary “filler”. Critics are saying this is a supreme return to form for the series and as a fan, I cannot be more excited.
The first 2 episodes are streaming now on Hulu. And tune in every Wednesday for a new episode.
