Although we are a bit short on new television to watch this weekend, there are numerous fantastic films to experience… so, let’s get into it!
NEW RELEASES: FILMS
THE SUICIDE SQUAD (IN THEATERS & STREAMING ON HBOMAX)
James Gunn’s vision of the notorious Suicide Squad is here! Critics and audiences alike are falling in love with this quasi-reboot. Whether you are as ecstatic about it as early critics, is left to be seen. But, one thing is for sure… you’re most likely going to enjoy it more than the original. The Suicide Squad has returning cast members Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. It also stars Idris Elba, John Cena, Michael Rooker, Sylvester Stallone, Nathan Fillion, Pete Davidson and many more. That Hashtag Show’s own Hunter Bolding says, “The film is a perfect comic-book movie filled to the brim with heart, fun, action, style.” [Full review HERE.] This is one of the best new releases this weekend, for sure.
NINE DAYS (IN THEATERS)
This beautiful and profound film from first-time feature director Edson Oda is 100% a must-see for htis weekend’s new releases. Nine Days is like a live-action version of Pixar’s Soul, but so much more. It follows a reclusive man who conducts a series of interviews with human souls, for one of them to get a chance to be born. Nine Days stars Black Panther’s Winston Duke, Deadpool 2’s Zazie Beetz, Doctor Strange’s Benedict Wong and an incredible supporting cast. In my review I said, “It is an eye-opening masterpiece that deserves to be seen, discussed and dissected for years to come.” [See our full review HERE!]
New Releases: VAL (AMAZON PRIME)
Val is a documentary featuring Val Kilmer in never-before-seen footage of his daily life. Oh, and did we mention… it spans 40 years? If you are a fan of this iconic actor and want to see an intimate and raw look into who he is and how he became Val Kilmer… this is for you. That Hashtag Show’s own Hunter Bolding said, “VAL is a great look into one of our finest actors out there, and a look into what it means to be a human being.” [Full review HERE.]
VIVO (NETFLIX)
Lin Manuel-Miranda is back this summer with an animated musical! Vivo is another product of Netflix’s partnership with Sony Pictures, after the incredible Mitchells vs. the Machines. The film follows a kinkajou who travels across the world to give a love letter to his owner’s old music partner. Though the film is a bit of a mess in its structure, the original music from Miranda (who also voices the lead) and its joyous celebration of culture… will most certainly delight all families this weekend.
NEW RELEASES: TV
MR. CORMAN (APPLE TV+)
This very personal passion project from writer/director/star Joseph Gordon-Levitt premieres its first two episodes today (August 6th). With new episodes premiering weekly. This is a deeply felt television series about a public schoolteacher in the San Fernando Valley. Mr. Corman works on a visually stunning and emotionally provocative level. I believe it will be a treat for any lovers of Levitt and his sorely-missed and underrated show HitRecord.
SHORT CIRCUIT: SEASON 2 (DISNEY+)
Though not technically a television show, this very SHORT series from Disney+ is a celebration of animation. Walt Disney Studios Animation has collected five up-and-coming filmmakers to work on five Disney shorts for this second season. Though all of these shorts vary in quality, they are all worth checking out! As I said in my review, “Short Circuit Season 2 shines a spotlight on a new group of talented and creative filmmakers… and their work should be celebrated.” [Full review HERE.]
