Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan as Falcon and Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Solider, Marvel Studios.

Marvel’s upcoming Disney Plus series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier could be shifting directions. According to Murphy’s Law podcast, the series will be changing its name for subsequent seasons due to a new thematic development in the first season.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will be the first Marvel series to premiere on Disney Plus. It will also be Marvel’s first television series set in Phase 4 of the MCU. The series entered production in October 2019. It was suspended in March 2020 due to the global pandemic. It is still slated to debut on streaming in October of this year. Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie will reprise their roles of Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier and Sam Wilson/Falcon respectively.

According to the most recent episode of Murphy’s Law podcast, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier may see a significant change after it’s debut. In the episode, Murphy broke the story that the show will conclude its first season with a significant thematic change. If it’s renewed for a second season, this change will cause the show to have a new title. This second season would essentially be the start of a new series, but it will be a continuation of the story from the first.

A Title Change Makes Sense

Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson with the shield in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios.

The series takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, where Steve Rogers retired as Captain America and handed the iconic shield to Sam. With that being the case, it makes perfect sense that the series would change its name. At the end of the first season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Falcon will likely fully take over the mantle of Captain America. This was alluded to in Endgame. It also has been depicted in the comics.

However, Bucky could take over the mantle instead. This has also been established in the comics and would be an interesting reversal of what was expected following Endgame. Or maybe they both become Captain America? Anything is possible and that’s what is so exciting about this news. Rest assured though, one or both of these characters will become Captain America by the end, and thus require a title change.

So, what do you think of this rumor? Do you think one of them will take over the mantle of Captain America? Or do you think that thematic change will be something entirely different? Let us know in the comments! Stay tuned here at That Hashtag Show for all your MCU news!
