After the fourth Scream film and the untimely death of it’s creator, Wes Craven, the future of the franchise was uncertain. David Arquette has appeared in every Scream film as the lovable goof, Dewey. As of now, we know that he’ll be returning for the fifth film in the subversive slasher series. Thanks to ComicBook.com, we know some other details about the upcoming film as well.

David Arquette is the only person on tap to reprise their role from the original films as of this moment. Matt Bettineelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are making their debut in the Scream universe as directors. The first to take up that mantle since Craven’s death. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are set to write the film. Vanderbilt is known for his work on Murder Mystery and the thriller Zodiac. Busick wrote the fantastic and awesome, Ready Or Not.

“I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new,” Arquette said in a statement. “Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.

But What About the Plot?

The details of the plot are unknown at this time. Following the trends of recent horror franchise sequelboots (reboot and sequel) would be very un-Scream. Unless they’re going to call back to the original intent of Craven’s first film in the series, they shouldn’t retread. So unless you’re going to have Dewey show the ropes to a whole new generation getting murdered by Ghost-Face, it would be a better use of the character in another capacity. According to the article, it won’t be completely free of ties to the original films. That’s a solid start already. Paying homage to your previous films and what made those films, is what the original Scream was all about.

The film will shoot later this year in Wilmington, North Carolina. A new Scream film should be just what the horror genre needs to get off it’s ass. With all the half-baked supernatural crap they’re spewing out these days, it’ll be nice to see a back to basics slasher. Movies like Ready Or Not, Halloween, and It Chapter One and Two set the standard for what horror movies could be like. You don’t have to completely rip-off your predecessors but you need to give them the proper respect. Bringing back David Arquette for the role of Dewey is a start down that path for this upcoming Scream 5.
