Last week brought the bombshell news that Disney and Sony had decided to not continue to partner on future Spider-Man projects. This split between the studios essentially removes the character from the MCU. In addition, Marvel will no longer be able to use or reference him in their movies. Fans were of course upset, with some fans calling for a boycott of Sony Spider-Man products including the PS4 games.
The real question that everyone wants to know is will director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland be returning. According to Deadline, Watts has already completed his contract with the previous two movies. It is being reported that he is being “heavily courted” for other jobs and Marvel Studios wants to talk to the filmmaker about working on future projects for them. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home were the two biggest feature films Watts had directed outside of the critically acclaimed Cop Car in 2015. Regardless of that fact though, Far From Home is now Sony’s highest-grossing film to date, with over $1.11 billion dollars making him a hot commodity in Hollywood.
Spider-Man’s Future
The news about how the Spider-Man actor himself has taken the news has been confusing to say the least. It was originally reported by Heroic Hollywood last week that Holland may have unfollowed Sony on Instagram. However, at this past weekend’s Disney’s D23 Expo, the actor was very diplomatic and even told the crowd:
“It’s been a crazy week, and I love you all from the bottom of my heart, and I love you 3000.”

The Spider-Man actor also elaborated on the situation saying the following:
“Basically, we’ve made five great movies. It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it.”

Multiple sources are reporting that Tom Holland only has an option for one more Spider-Man movie in his contract. Some speculation suggests that he may choose to walk away from the role, due to his feelings about this entire situation. If he did decide to walk away, that could force Sony to reconsider their position about their break with Marvel.
