Obi-Wan Vs. Darth Maul’s Final Lightsaber Duel On Tatooine
We were treated to this epic piece of story telling during the season 3 finale of Star Wars Rebels. Since this was an animated series on the Disney XD channel, not as many fans have seen this particular lightsaber battle. If you are one of those people, please do yourself a favor… HIT PLAY ON THE VIDEO ABOVE!
CAUTION: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
What if Darth Maul won? He figured out that it was the “chosen one” Obi-Wan was there to protect. He would have taken Luke and it would have led young Skywalker down a much different path. Obi-Wan Kenobi knew this, you can you it in his expression the moment Maul reads the situation.
Here are a few things that I want to say about this amazing piece of animated story telling…
There are so many important things about this scene. First, we learn that Obi-Wan stayed on Tatooine after Episode 3 for a very specific reason, to protect Luke. True, this has been a known fact in the fandom. However, to the best of my knowledge, it’s the first time it was vocalized on screen.
Secondly, if you notice, Maul uses the same attacks on Obi-Wan that he used on Qui-Gon Jinn in Phantom Menace. Kudos to Dave Filoni on this short but sweet “samurai-esque” battle. It led beautifully into Maul’s death scene and the moment shared between he and Kenobi. Epic!
Lastly, I want to point out, the scene immediately after the the fight. We hear Aunt Beru calling “Luke,” did it sound familiar? It should, the soundbite was from the 1977 original scene. Admittedly, goosebumps and a childlike grin the first time I heard it.

I loved it. But for the life of me, I still miss Maul. As far as Star Wars villains go he was one of the best I ever saw. Sorry that is just how I feel.
The way Maul attacked for the second strike is impossible though. Wrong end of the dual saber for his body position.
Loved it. It showed the development and growth of Kenobi in the years between QGJ’s death and Maul’s. QGJ dies in 32 BBY, Maul in 2 BBY, so roughly 30 years.
Maul spends the first 10 years of that going insane, winding up on Lotho Minor. He spends the next year building a criminal gang and taking over Mandalore. His time is spent plotting revenge against Kenobi, and later both Kenobi and Sidious. Has long stretches either hanging out in prison or waiting underground for something to happen at the Sith Temple on Malachor. While he grows two criminal empires, he doesn’t really grow.
Kenobi trains a padawan, leads clones in the war, goes undercover as a bounty hunter, maims Anakin, etc etc. much development and doesn’t spend all his time thinking about Maul.
Life lessons from Star Wars.
