CinemaCon 2019 contained plenty of new announcements and information about upcoming films and franchises. One of the most surprising was Disney confirming that The New Mutants would still receive a theatrical release.

The X-Men spinoff film, which was originally part of 21st Century Fox’s slate, was said to be headed to Hulu or another streaming service after the Disney merger was complete. The film studio dispelled that rumor during Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon, though. Chairman Alan Horn announced that The New Mutants would be coming to a theater near you sometime this year.

Who’s ready for Breakfast Club, horror-style?

The convention also released a graphic of upcoming releases which reiterated the confirmation. Aside from the X-Men films Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, the graphic also announced the release of the following, additional films:

  • Artemis Fowl
  • Maleficent: Mistress of Evil;
  • Frozen II; and
  • Star Wars: Episode IX.

Based on the order of movies listed, it’s possible that the Maisie Williams horror flick could be keeping its August release date.

While a Fox representative mentioned that some of the studio’s films would shift their schedules to new dates, a release of August 2nd, 2019 no longer seems so far-fetched. Then again, there hasn’t been much news on the film since the trailer was released in October of 2017. All we know is that the studio has pushed back the release a total of three times. Hopefully the next date we receive is the final one.

Funnily enough, just last week Maisie Williams told Den of Geek that she had no idea if the film was even coming out. Joinging the Game of Thrones star in the movie are Anya Taylor Joy (Glass), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why), and Blu Hunt (Another Life). Together they make up a cast of young mutants who fight to escape a secret facility. They had been captives held ever since they discovered their powers. It’s meant to be a horror film, despite being part of the larger superhero genre. Hopefully it will be a different experience for audiences who are already overly familiar with various forms of action and adventure in the Marvel universe.
