Darth Vader could return in Episode IX thanks to the canon surprise we got in the new Darth Vader comic #22. Below, we break down the various ways our favorite villain could return to the franchise.
Sith Immortality.
Darth Vader comic #22 gives us what appears to be a Sith ghost. This spirit comes from the helmet of a newly introduced Sith named Lord Momin. The helmet was given to Darth Vader as a gift from Darth Sidious to take to Mustafar. Once Vader was there it spoke to him. Momin spoke about his past, the Dark Side of the force, and how he could help Vader. Momin was also able to inhabit a new body that was given to him from Darth Vader. So, now that we have seen Sith immortality this could have a huge impact on Episode IX.
Darth Vader’s helmet.
Could this be a setup for what we may see in Episode IX? We all remember when Kylo Ren was speaking to the mask of his grandfather, Darth Vader. At that moment the mask never responds back. But, has it spoken to him before? Just think about what Kylo said while talking to the mask in the Force Awakens.
“Show me again, the power of the darkness… and I will let nothing stand in our way. Show me, Grandfather, and I will finish what you started”
Could Vader’s mask have possibly led Kylo Ren to Mustafar at one point and showed him the power of the Darkside? Just remember this movie is to end the Skywalker saga so there is a possibility of his return in some form.
Can Vader return?
Now I know that a lot of Star Wars fans will say that Darth Vader can’t return. That when he died in the Return of the Jedi he turned back from the Dark Side, redeemed himself and became a force ghost. But, could Anakin still be the one to bring balance to the Force? Obi-Wan Kenobi did say that his apprentice “ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader”. So, why couldn’t we get two distinct ghosts through the Force?
Only time will tell.
Remember this is all speculation and rumors. So, we will have to wait until Episode IX comes out in December or 2019 to see what happens next. What we do know is that JJ Abrams is ready to fix the issues for Star Wars and finish out the Skywalker saga.
