Hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to see the newest trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home. In case you haven’t, we see a scene where Mysterio tells Peter he is from another Earth. Nick Fury then explains that the Snap tore a hole in their dimension. For fans who have grown up reading Marvel comic books, this appears to be a clear indication that a Multiverse exists within the MCU.
If you didn’t spend hours as kid reading comic books and are just a fan of the MCU, you may be asking “what the heck is a Multiverse?” To begin with let’s establish what timeline the current MCU is taking place in. Earth-616 is the established main universe where most Marvel comics, and we assume the MCU, take place. The Multiverse is the collection of alternate universes. Some take place in the past or future. Often, new universes are born due to time traveling (sound familiar). Another name for these new universes is “alternate timeline”.
So how does Spider-Man: Far From Home give us Spider-Men?
Well, honestly it doesn’t necessarily. However, if you have read the comic books or you watched last year’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, you know that every Multiverse has its own version of Spider-Man or Spider-Woman or Spider-Something. Other versions of our web slinging friend that have made appearances of the years include:
- Spider-Man: The Manga (Japanese magna version)
- Spider-Girl
- Spider-Monkey
- A zombie version of Spider-Man
- Spider-Boy
- Spider-Man 2099
- Bruce Banner as Spider-Man
- Spider-Gwen
- Spider-Man Noir
- Ultimate Spider-Man
- Miles Morales
- Spider-Ham
…and honestly the list could go on!
Some have speculated that a Spider-UK could make an appearance, because of a recent toy leak. Twitter user @UpToTASK tweeted pictures of a Spider-Man: Far From Home action figure that fueled these rumors. This of course only adds to the Multiverse theories.
All this is great but…
Let’s not forget that Marvel likes to mislead us with the information they give us in their trailers. The Russo Brothers have openly admitted to misleading fans with sequences not in the movies or by altering scenes that were included in the Infinity War and Endgame trailers.
So, let’s keep in mind who Mysterio was in the comic books. When he made his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #13, he also proclaims to be a valiant superhero. However, in that storyline Spidey was the villain due to new reports that he was robbing banks. Once Peter realizes he is not crazy, nor is he robbing banks he tracks down Mysterio and discovers he is Quentin Beck, a failed special effects technician. Basically, he is not a super honest guy, which means there is a good chance he is lying.
What do you think? Do you think the MCU is introducing a Multiverse? We’ll all find out on July 2 when Far From Home hits theaters.
