According to the latest rumors, Cruella 2 will apparently be a musical. Even better, Taylor Swift will be returning to the film series as a major villain. Wait, go back, she was in the first film?
A More Musical De Vil?
The DisInsider has just released a report about rumors for the upcoming sequel to the live-action Cruella film, which currently doesn’t have a title other than the working one of Cruella 2. According to these rumors, not only is this sequel likely going to head directly to Disney+ and bypass theaters entirely, but also that this sequel will be of the musical variety. It seems that audiences loved the music of the first film so much, that they decided to go with the flow and make the whole sequel be a musical. With Emma Stone herself having sung very well in the musical comedy-drama La La Land, performed in the live theater musical Cabaret, and having sung her own songs and released music videos; this seems like a recipe for success.
There is one other significant rumor about Cruella 2 though, aside from that. According to The DisInsider, the latest rumors also have Taylor Swift play the role of a villain in the sequel. What’s more, this villain will apparently be “Cruella’s match”, according to their source. This suggests a major starring role for Taylor Swift if these rumors are true. What’s more though, is that this isn’t Taylor Swift’s first time in this film series. Also according to The DisInsider, Taylor Swift allegedly had a very minor role in the first film. So minor that this character didn’t even have a name. You can check out an image of the alleged character below.
However, I would like to remind everyone that even The DisInsider notes that these are unverified rumors for now. Take these Cruella 2 rumors with a grain of salt until we get official confirmation from Disney. That said, we may get that confirmation at the upcoming D23 Expo. Tune back in to THS then to see if these rumors bear fruit.
Cruella: Details
Cruella is a 2021 live action crime comedy film that’s also a prequel reboot to the live action 101 Dalmatians film series, which are themselves the live action adaptation of the 1956 children’s novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. This film also serves as an alternate origin story for Cruella De Vil, in case the title didn’t tell you that already. Craig Gillespie is the director of the film, with Dana Fox and Tony McNamara writing the screenplay, and Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel, and Steve Zissis story-writing. Andrew Gunn, Marc Platt, and Kristin Burr produced it; with Nicolas Karakatsanis responsible for cinematography, Tatiana S. Riegel editing, and Nicholas Britell composing the music. Lastly, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures is distributing this film.
Cruella stars Emma Stone as the titular Cruella De Vil, Emma Thompson as the Baroness, Joel Fry as Jasper, and Paul Walter Hauser as Horace. As for what the film is about? Well, Disney+ has an official synopsis for the film on its page. Check it out below:
“Disney’s CRUELLA follows the early days of one of cinema’s most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains. During the 1970s London punk rock revolution, a young grifter (Emma Stone), transforms herself into the raucous, revenge-bent Cruella de Vil.”
Cruella released on May 28, 2021. You can watch it only on Disney+.
