No damsel in distress here. (And no immediate death-by-beheading either.) The new Prime Video series My Lady Jane is a swashbuckling romantasy that puts a twist on English history.

In this story, King Henry VIII’s son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey is not beheaded, and neither is her rascal of a husband Guildford. Instead, the brilliant and headstrong Jane, shocked to be crowned queen overnight, finds herself the target of nefarious villains coming for the crown (and her head). Check out the trailer for the show below.

Here’s the official synopsis from Prime Video:

Gird your loins for the tragic tale of Lady Jane Grey, the young Tudor noblewoman who was Queen of England for nine days and then beheaded in 1553… F*ck that. We’re retelling history the way it should have happened: the damsel in distress saves herself. This is an epic tale of true love and high adventure set in an alt-universe of action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and rompy-pompy. Buckle up.

The series stars newcomer Emily Bader in the titular role of Jane Grey. The extended cast also features Edward Bluemel (Killing Eve) as Guildford Dudley, Jordan Peters (Pirates) as King Edward, Dominic Cooper (Preacher) as Lord Seymour, Anna Chancellor (Pennyworth) as Jane’s mother Lady Frances Grey, and Rob Brydon (The Trip) as Lord Dudley, Guildford’s father. Jim Broadbent (The Duke) plays the Duke of Leicester, Jane’s uncle, Henry Ashton (Outlander) plays Guildford’s brother Stan, Isabella Brownson (Napoleon) and Robyn Betteridge (Wheel of Time) play Jane’s sisters, Kate O’Flynn (Landscapers), and Abbie Hern (Enola Holmes 2) play the King’s sisters, Princess Mary and Princess Bess, respectively.

My Lady Jane is inspired by the bestselling book by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows. The series comes from creator Gemma Burgess, who also serves as co-showrunner/executive producer with Meredith Glynn. Jamie Babbit (Only Murders in the Building) directs five of the eight episodes and serves as producing director/executive producer.

My Lady Jane premieres with all eight episodes on Prime Video globally June 27.
