A Pacific Rim prequel TV show is moving forward at Amazon Studios. The upcoming live-action project is in development and will premiere on Prime Video, a collaboration between Legendary and Amazon MGM Studios.

Eric Heisserer will serve as writer and executive producer of the TV prequel under his Chronology banner. The franchise started in 2013 with the release of Guillermo Del Toro’s feature Pacific Rim. It was a commercial success, making $411 million on a $180 million budget.

The science fiction film is set in a future where humans are at war with Kaiju, monsters that have emerged from an interdimensional portal located at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

A sequel titled Pacific Rim Uprising was released in March 2018 to mixed reviews. The film was a box office disappointment and was criticized for lacking originality and dense character backstories compared to Del Toro’s original film. This was followed up by an anime-style animated sequel, Pacific Rim: The Black, which streamed for two seasons on Netflix.

Eric Heisserer Attached To Pacific Rim TV Prequel

The news of a television prequel was first announced in August 2024, with Eric Heisserer attached to the project. Heisserer previously developed the Netflix series Shadow and Bone and wrote the Oscar-nominated script for 2016’s Arrival. He also penned the scripts for 2010’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, Final Destination 5, and Bird Box. His most recent credit is 2020’s Bloodshoot starring Vin Diesel.

“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” Legendary Television president Jason Clodfelter said in a statement at the time of the prequel announcement. “We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

The plot details and cast for this Pacific Rim prequel are still being kept under wraps. The series will be set before the feature films and could lead to more Pacific Rim movies.
