A new Scooby-Doo series is on the way – but this one’s a bit different. The upcoming Netflix project marks the first live-action TV series for Scooby and the Mystery Inc. gang.

Netflix describes the show as “a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog”. Here’s the official logline for the project:

“During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”

The eight-episode series comes from executive producer Greg Berlanti. Berlanti has previously overseen a ton of teen genre TV over on The CW (including DC’s Arrowverse shows and Riverdale); his EP work for Netflix includes shows like You and Dead Boy Detectives. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers.

“One of my first and favorite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cells,” Berlanti recalled. “Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation. We are grateful to them and everyone at Warners and Netflix for the partnership in helping bring this iteration of Scooby-Doo to life!”

Live-action Scooby-Doo?

Animated variations on Scooby-Doo have entertained audiences for over 50 years. In the early 2000s, two live-action feature films released. However, this new Netflix series will mark the first time Scooby-Doo has gone live-action for television.

But that leaves one major question: who will play the Mystery Inc. gang?

(Okay, two major questions, actually. Will Scooby be played by a real dog, or a CG one?)

Netflix didn’t reveal any casting today when announcing the series. The live-action films featured Matthew Lillard (Shaggy), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Daphne), Freddie Prinze Jr. (Fred), and Linda Cardellini (Velma) – a cast many Scooby fans very much enjoyed.

So, what do you think about Netflix launching a live-action Scooby series? Who would you cast in the show? Let us know in the comments below.
