HBO officially confirmed today the casting of six actors for its upcoming Harry Potter TV series. The stars will take on key roles as members of the Hogwarts staff.

Casting includes six-time Emmy winner John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts; Golden Globe winner Janet McTeer as Transfiguration professor Minerva McGonagall; Emmy and BAFTA nominee Paapa Essiedu as Potions professor Severus Snape; and BIFA nominee Nick Frost as gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid. All of these roles are described by HBO as series regulars.

In addition, the series announced two recurring cast members. Luke Thallon will play Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Quirinus Quirrell. Five-time BAFTA winner Paul Whitehouse will also appear as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch.

“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch. We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life,” said Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod in a statement. Gardiner serves as showrunner and executive producer on the upcoming Harry Potter series; Mylod also EP’s and directs multiple episodes.

HBO describes the series as “a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author J.K. Rowling”. Rowling also executive produces the series.

Casting for the main Harry Potter trio – Harry, Ron, and Hermione – has not been announced.

The show does not have a release date at this time. When it airs, it will stream on Max.
