Any fans of Chinese martial arts films will have heard of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This particular wuxia martial arts film from all the way back in 2000 is one of the most famous examples of that genre, being the film adaptation of the Chinese wuxia novel of the same name by Wang Dulu. This film alone actually catapulted Chinese martial arts films as a whole into the Western limelight. Before then, they’d just been a niche genre that few in the West knew about. Then suddenly after this film made its debut, everyone wanted to know more about wuxia. All with the film having been made on a $17 million USD budget to boot. The whole situation basically resulted in this film becoming one of the most famous films in the world.
Amazon is fully aware of this fame, and seemingly wants to capitalize on it. Variety has confirmed that Amazon is in the process of making a live-action TV adaptation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Jason Ning is the writer and executive producer behind this TV series alongside Ying Lou. Ron D. Moore and Maril Davis are also executive producers for Tall Ship Productions, with Johnny Levin and Roy Lee executive producing for Vertigo Entertainment, and Hong Wang and Qin Wang doing the same for the Wang Dulu Estate. Sony Pictures Television will be the overall producer.
Alas, we don’t have a release window to give you all. However, we do have the logline for this Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon TV series to tease the plot. You can read it below:
Amidst stunning landscapes and spectacular action, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ follows Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two star-crossed warriors, as they struggle between forbidden love and the pull of modernity — caught between preserving their way of life or embracing a future together.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon TV Adaptation Being Made by Amazon

Admittedly, I think we can safely say that no one was expecting Amazon to pull off this move. I don’t think anyone could’ve anticipated a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon TV series. Still, considering that wuxia is a lot more famous these days than back in 2000, I can’t really see this TV series having the same impact as that original film. Still, it might be a fun watch for those of us who love Chinese martial arts films. It might even pave the way for the rest of Wang Dulu’s Crane Iron Pentalogy to get turned into visual media. We will just have to see what becomes of this TV adaptation.
