Most people see Star Wars as an epic space opera with high fantasy overtones. After all, that was basically the genre of the original trilogy that began in 1977. And yet, not many people seem to realize that over the years, the franchise has branched out into numerous other genres. It didn’t just begin with Disney and their other oddball entries into the franchise like the comedic heist story that is Solo: A Star Wars Story. No, it began much, much earlier with the massive amount of books that collectively comprise the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU). The books have gone into such genres as dark fantasy and zombie horror. That has allowed the books to explore genres previously not thought possible for the franchise.
Alas, Disney has long since declared the entire EU (which they rebranded Star Wars Legends) to be non-canon. However, it’s pretty clear that they continue to draw a massive amount of inspiration from the EU. How else do you explain them branching out into horror for Star Wars?
Comic Book (quoting an archived article from Business Insider) has just revealed that Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy may have teased a Star Wars horror film in the works at Lucasfilm. When Gilroy was asked about an earlier comment he had made to SFX Magazine, he joked about wanting to see Lucasfilm attempt a “three-camera sitcom” or a horror film in the galaxy far, far away next”. However, when pressed about it, Gilroy then confirmed:
“They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah.“
Alas, there’s no other concrete details about this Star Wars horror film. It might even have been a slip of the tongue on Gilroy’s part. We will just have to wait for confirmation from Lucasfilm at a later date.
Mystery Star Wars Horror Film Teased by Tony Gilroy?
From the looks of it, this entire thing may well be a whoopsie on the part of Tony Gilroy. Something he wasn’t supposed to reveal, basically. However, it does raise some exciting prospects about this Star Wars horror film if it’s true. Fans of the old Star Wars books may remember that zombies existed in the EU. The Death Troopers were some of the most notable examples of this, being a sapient zombie plague created as an Imperial superweapon that they then lost control of. A big whoopsie on the Empire’s part, but a great recipe for horror for us as the audience. I would be most excited if we’re going to get a Death Troopers movie at some point from Lucasfilm. However, this is all pure speculation based on what may be leaked info. Take it all with a grain of salt.
