Wolf Man is out now on 4K UHD from Universal Home Entertainment. In a nice move, the release got a 4K UHD right away, which we sometimes have to wait a bit for. This new movie from Leigh Whannell shows off some interesting concepts when it comes to the myth of the werewolf. This review is all about the actual 4K UHD presentation and disc, so if you want a review of the movie, check out our review below.
As for the actual package here on 4K UHD for Wolf Man, the disc comes with an excellent 2.39:1 HDR10 transfer. The only thing I can say about the picture quality is that the really dark scenes do suffer a bit here. The blacks and greys of the image are extreme to a degree that makes it almost invisible at points. Other than those colors, the transfer has some stunning colors and strong detail. This contrasts with the movie because most of it takes place in a darkly lit farmhouse. But the scenes that have lots of vibrant colors pop off the screen.
The practical effects and gore of the makeup look fantastic on a 4K screen in the dark. If you do watch this one, try to get it going while its dark out, the effect does end up better. The deep black colors do end up feeling more like a choice on Whannel’s part than a transfer issue with the actual disc.
Audio And Special Features Are A Highlight

The Dolby Atmos track on this release is the best part of it. You can hear every creak, every breath, and the audio-tension that the film buiids up is heightened by an excellent mix. The sound of the film thunders and it actually works to heighten the experience of watching the movie. The jump scares are even better watching with the surround sound, because you can sort of hear where the beast is coming from, but you never know exactly. The impressive scene in the middle where Blake starts turning and you hear the thud of every step of a spider, makes for a great movie-watching experience.
Here are the special features listed for Wolf Man.
- Audio Commentary featuring Leigh Whannell
- Unleashing A New Monster (HD 8:07)
- Designing Wolf Man (HD 8:54)
- Hands-on Horror (HD 6:51)
- Nightmares and Soundscapes (HD 6:56)
Conclusion
This doesn’t come with as many special features as I would have liked, but the ones that are here are good. The audio commentary with Leigh Whannell is the best part of the bunch and gives some insight into the film and his process. There are some great tidbits about what kind of effects they used and he’s an engaging listen through the whole thing. The rest of the features feel pretty stock for a new studio release like this.
If you haven’t seen the movie, Wolf Man does do a bit different when it comes to the classic myth we all know and love, and this 4K UHD presentation of it is a fairly excellent 4K UHD release. The actual film choices made, make for a picture that’s pretty dark, that you need to watch in a dim room, but other than that, if you liked this movie, this package is worth buying.
