Netflix’s The Life List follows a grieving daughter whose mother sends her on a journey of self-discovery from beyond the grave. The past year of Netflix films, let alone rom-coms, has been pretty underwhelming. So, when journeying into The Life List my expectations were pretty low. I was excited about the cast. I’ve been a fan of Connie Britton (Nashville) and Sofia Carson (Descendants) for a while. So, I was excited to see what these two powerhouse women had to offer.
As the movie unfolds, I found myself pleasantly surprised by its depth and emotional resonance. The character of Alex (Sofia Carson) embarks on an incredibly relatable journey. Before her mother’s passing, we see Alex stuck in mid-land. She recently lost her beloved teaching job, so she is working for her mother’s company. Alex’s life is further complicated by her mediocre relationship with a partner she feels indifferent towards. Alex’s mother sees her daughter settling for less than she deserves. Alex is stuck in a cycle of complacency that leaves her feeling unfulfilled and confused. So, like most mothers, she needs to help.

In the wake of her mother’s death, Alex is faced with the daunting task of rediscovering herself. From beyond the grave, her mother orchestrates a unique inheritance plan. This plan sends Alex on a transformative journey known as the Life List. This journey is not merely a series of tasks. It is also an opportunity for Alex to rekindle the passion and spark that have long been extinguished. Each item on the list serves as a stepping stone, encouraging her to confront her fears, rediscover her dreams, and embrace the vibrant life that is waiting for her.
Sofia Carson shines in The Life List. Following her success in the Netflix film Purple Hearts and the recent hit Carry On, she consistently demonstrates her talent as a worthy leading lady. Carson has fantastic chemistry with both her leading men, Kyle Allen (The Map of Tiny Perfect Things) & Sebastian De Souza (The Great). However, watching her work with Connie Britton, whether in person or through the DVD left to her, is truly a remarkable experience.
The Life List beautifully captures the essence of self-discovery, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, there is always a path to light and fulfillment. So, if you’re looking for an inspirational, heartfelt rom-com, make sure to check out The Life List streaming on Netflix!
