Superman Day day isnt until this friday, but the Summer of Superman started today. Created by Dan Slott, Joshua Williamson, Mark Waid and Jorge Jiménez; the Summer of Superman Special delivers a three chapter story set in Smallville that will bring threats from the past, present, and future to the Superm family. Thanks to our friends at DC, I was able to get an early look at this issue to share my thoughts with you. So Whitout anymore waiting here is my review for Summer of Superman Special #1.
Summer Of Superman Special #1
Before making his big splash in the DC Universe with Superman Unlimited, acclaimed writer Dan Slott joins storytelling heavyweights Mark Waid (Justice League Unlimited, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest), Joshua Williamson (Superman, DC All In Special) and Jorge Jiménez (Batman, Super Sons) for the Summer of Superman Special, arriving at participating comic book shops and digital retailers Wednesday, April 16.

In this oversize issue, Slott, Waid and Williamson deliver a single story in three acts, highlighted by Jiménez’s dynamic art style that has made him a favorite of comic book fans worldwide. The wedding of Lana Lang and John Henry Irons (a.k.a. Steel) serves as the backdrop for an outpouring of love and support from family and friends. However, their big day will also be big trouble, as threats from the past, present and future will spawn major new conflicts for the Superman family.
Featuring a main and variant cover by Jiménez, this 48-page one-shot features additional variant covers by Alexander Lozano, John Giang, Mahmud Asrar, and Dan Jurgens, plus an adorable variant cover featuring Krypto, (Super)man’s best friend, by Chrissie Zullo-Uminga.
Summer Of Superman Special #1 The Review
Thank you once again for checking out another one of my comic book reviews. Like always I like to keep them short, simple, and as spoiler-free as I can. So in the new Summer of Superman Special we head to Smallville. There we start with a young Superman who’s day gets turned upside very quickly, but at the same time helps him see what his future holds. Of course we move through the future to Lana Lang and John Herny Irons big day and once again Superman has to fight an emeny of the past but this time he has his family to help. Why does this keep happening and why does it happen during important events in SUperman’s life?

At first I thought this comic was going to go at a slow pace and then out of nowhere the actions is non-stop. I an normally not a fan of stories that have time jumps but this on does it right. The creative team mad it all work together well and mad it tie everything all together. Overall this was just a well written one-shot. Also the art was fun and brought the panels together well. It really made it easier to follow along and made you really appreciate the action scenes. The art also really shined when Superman went on an unexpected journey (ill just leave it at that).
If you are a Superman fan then the Summer of Superman Special is a must read for you. You can check it out now at your local comic shop.
