Devil May Cry is one of the most highly anticipated of Netflix’s upcoming shows. It’s really not surprising, considering how popular the video game franchise of the same name from Capcom is. In fact, the most recent entry in the series, Devil May Cry 5, ended up selling 9.9 million copies as of December 2024, which in turn made it the best-selling game in the whole franchise. It’s hard to argue against its popularity with numbers like that. Part of the reason for that popularity is because of the franchise’s music. The entire series has always had fantastic music to stylishly slay demons to, with sick beats that pumped you up the longer you’re able to sustain that combo.
Thus, you can perfectly understand why Netflix would want to ensure that their Devil May Cry animated series has a similar level of quality with their music. In fact, they just showed off a brand new music video featuring the new song “Afterlife” by Evanescence, co-written by Alex Seaver of Mako and Evanescence’s Amy Lee. It’s a song that will also be featured multiple times in the show itself in an alternate version. What that alternate version will be is anyone’s guess at the moment.
And all just before its upcoming premiere on April 3, 2025 to boot. A premiere which, as you can guess, you can watch only on Netflix. Unfortunately, I do think the choice of song and its tone is a bit…off from what we’ve come to expect from Devil May Cry.
“Afterlife” Falls Just a Bit Flat for Devil May Cry [Opinion]
Speaking as someone who’s become a fan of the music of Devil May Cry 5, my opinion of “Afterlife” is a bit…meh? The song overall feels a bit too slow-paced for the game series. It’s like “Bury the Light” but with a pacing that almost wants to lull you to sleep, only rescued by the more intense rock-like segments. I actually like the song itself, but I don’t feel that this version of the song fits the show. Here’s hoping that alternate version of the song will be a bit more action-focused for the battle scenes.
