The long-gestating Magic: The Gathering movie from Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment has finally found someone to helm it. Deadline is reporting that Matt Johnson is set to direct the first film out of the live-action Magic universe. Deadline is reporting that Johnson doesn’t have a deal in place, but he’s their choice to direct. There aren’t any other details like a script or what period of Magic the film is taking on.

Hasbro and Legendary announced the intention for a Magic: The Gathering universe of films and TV in February. Magic is the first billion-dollar brand for Hasbro and one of their top money makers to this day. It is recognized as the world’s first trading card game, with more than 50 million players since it debuted in 1993. The game is easy to learn, but difficult to master, like a cross between chess and poker. You have a deck of cards that is either pre-built or that you assemble yourself, and battle against friends and enemies alike in one-on-one or multiplayer games. The game has a rich storyline that Hasbro and Legendary can use for these various projects.

They’ve even announced crossovers with properties like Marvel, Lord of the Rings, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Dungeons & Dragons, and more.
