Once a year, the film industry descends upon Las Vegas for CinemaCon, the largest and most important gathering of theater owners from around the world. And as part of the convention, Hollywood’s top studios take the stage at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace to tease some of their biggest upcoming projects. Sony is kicking off this year’s festivities with the first presentation and That Hashtag Show is on the ground in Sin City to report on the coming attractions.

28 Years Later

Tom Rothman, the Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, welcomes attendees to their panel. After his opening remarks, he introduces prolific director Danny Boyle to discuss 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to his beloved post-apocalyptic movies 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Before showing the new trailer, Boyle shared that he “still loves zombies, the British apocalypse, and to blow shit up.” He also confirmed that Cillian Murphy, who is serving as an executive producer on the film, will in fact appear onscreen. However, “you have to wait a while to see him” once the movie premieres on June 20, 2025.

Before wrapping up, Boyle announced that 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the second film in this new trilogy written by himself and Alex Garland and directed by Nia DaCosta, has finished shooting.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

The friendly neighborhood web-slinger’s neighborhood grew exponentially when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse debuted in 2018. Now, Sony is preparing for the final chapter of this story as they prepare to drop the last piece of the trilogy Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” Unfortunately, True Believers will have to wait until June 4, 2027 for what producer Phil Lord and co-directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson call “a massive finale.” They also teased that the animation this time around will be completely different than previous installments. To prove it, they showed a sizzle reel that our correspondent described as “incredible.”

Other Coming Attractions

Sony then turned to Darren Aronofsky as he shared a preview of his crime thriller Caught Stealing starring Austin Butler, Matt Smith, Bad Bunny, Zoe Kravitz, and Liev Schreiber. The film follows a former baseball player who finds himself in embroiled in the seedy NYC underbelly of the 1990s. Barbarian and Companion filmmaker Zach Cregger then teased that his version of Resident Evil will be a “wild ride” and “unlike any of the previous films.” And South Korean-American sensation Kogonada of After Yang and Pachinko fame discussed A Big Bold Beautiful Journey starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, which is scheduled for release on September 19, 2025.

On the animated side of things, Tyree Dillihay discussed his upcoming feature GOAT, which is produced by NBA star Stephen Curry. Sony also shared their commitment to anime by revealing new releases for Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man.

The Horrors Persist

Moving on to some horror offerings, Sony spotlighted the next installment of the Insidious series, which is slated for August 21, 2026. Then, familiar faces Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. joined I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise newcomers Madelyn Cline and Joshua Orpin in the first footage from the lega-sequel directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

Grand Gear from Godzilla Minus One filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki, comedian Nate Bargatze’s cinematic debut The Breadwinner, Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun, and a new Jumanji film were also discussed before new details about two long-gestating projects were uncovered: District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp’s highly anticipated Starship Troopers (which is said to not be a remake) and the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda from Wes Ball of The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (which is now set to debut on March 26, 2027).

The Big Finish

As their time onstage wound down, the presentation only ramped up. To celebrate Karate Kid: Legends, which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 30, 2025, stars Ralph Macchio and Ben Wong emerged after a drum performance and martial arts demonstration to debut two new scenes and the new trailer.

Then, coming all the way from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Destin Daniel Cretton took the stage and shared a message from Tom Holland that revealed the title of their upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Together, they announced that pre-production is in full swing on Spider-Man: Brand New Day and principal photography begins this summer.

Finally, the legendary Sam Mendes confirmed the heavily speculated casting of his upcoming Beatles biopic project: Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Harris Dickinson as John Lennon. But this isn’t just going to be a one-and-done production. Collectively known as The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, the filmmaker is making four separate movies told from each member’s point of view and they will all release in April of 2028. And fittingly enough, Mendes’ Fab Four took the stage and took a bow together in a similar fashion as the original band did many years before.
