With its mix of Indigenous culture, a winning coming-of-age story, as well as a charming ensemble cast, Netflix’s North of North is a refreshingly heartfelt series that’s as meaningful as it is bingeable.
Set in the fictional Arctic town of Ice Cove, Nunavut, the series follows Siaja, a young Inuk woman played brilliantly by Anna Lambe. We meet Siaja amid the chaos of a very public separation from her husband, Ting. After doing everything she was “supposed to do,” from marriage, motherhood, and keeping up appearances, she is now setting out on a journey of personal reinvention. Along the way, she must balance single parenthood, small-town gossip, and the challenge of redefining herself in a place where everyone knows her business.
Created by Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, North of North offers an authentic representation of Inuit life rarely seen on screen. The show avoids stereotypes and instead focuses on the everyday beauty, complexity, and humor of life in the North. It highlights deep community connections, cultural traditions, and the resilience of its characters while also embracing the awkward, hilarious, and sometimes painful realities of growing up and starting over.
At its heart, North of North is a story about transformation, identity, and finding strength in unexpected places. Whether you’re laughing at its quirks or tearing up at its emotional beats, it’s a series that resonates deeply.
