Stephen King’s The Long Walk is a dystopian novel first published in 1979 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Set in a future version of the United States, the story revolves around a brutal and deadly annual event known as “The Long Walk”. During which 100 teenage boys are selected to participate in a grueling, endless walk across the country.

The participants must maintain a pace of four miles per hour without stopping. If they fall behind, they are warned. If they fail to keep up again, they are shot and killed by soldiers. The last boy remaining alive is declared the winner and receives a grand prize. That said, the true nature of the reward is ambiguous and unsettling.
