Freaky Tales is an upcoming action-comedy set in 1987 Oakland, California, written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The film weaves together four interconnected stories that highlight the city’s vibrant culture and history. At its core, Freaky Tales follows a diverse group of underdog characters navigating the often turbulent world of ’80s Oakland. The film follows punk rockers protecting their turf. Also, a female rap duo striving for hip-hop stardom, and a debt collector seeking redemption. There is also a reimagined take on NBA star Eric “Sleepy” Floyd’s unforgettable 1987 playoff performance, the film captures the heart and soul of the era.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to discuss the film’s creation as well as its deep connection to Oakland’s culture. With an all-star cast, a captivating storyline, Freaky Tales is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most highly anticipated releases.
