WondLa Season 2 just soared onto Apple TV+. Eva and Rovender are here to guide viewers through that fantastic world again. That Hashtag Show got to sit for a delightful interview with Gary Anthony Williams. He plays Rovender in WondLa and absolutely loves the tone of this show. (Gary mentioned something about 600 seasons during our conversation. So, Apple should keep that in mind if they’re listening!)

Found family is a huge theme in WondLa. Williams explained how that concept drew him to the series. The star told us, “What I love about this show, it is that one of those… ‘They say you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family,’ sort of things.”

“This show really does explore what it means to be family. When friends become family, the most unlikely people that you would ever have in your family, become your family,” Williams joked. “Like my relationship to Eva, in fact, a very contentious relationship at the very beginning. Because, I’ve gone through some situations with my real family where they’re no longer around.”

“So to bring her into my family full and her doing the same… And the help that I’ve given her in the past that we’ll get to see in this back around the other way,” he teased. “Those themes are what make this show so attractive to me. I think they make season two especially attractive to the viewers as well.”

WondLa’s Gary Anthony Williams on Mastering Rovender’s Language

WondLa crafts a world that feels real and lived in despite the animated trappings. Actually told us that he had meetings with a professional language creator to help craft the sounds of Rovender’s people. That level of attention to detail over its guidance is something that the team prides themselves on. It’s a dedication to mastering even the smallest details that reverberates throughout WondLa.

Rovender & Eva in WondLa

“There’s a whole guy who creates new languages that created the language of Rovender’s people,” Williams revealed. To my right, I have like a little file folder for different jobs. But, especially from this job, of all Rovender’s language. To the point where I could go, ‘oh, yeah, I know how to say that.’”

“So, you have people creating that world. When I was traveling. I got to meet with the writer who created the who created the book. For myself, I see things in small chunks. What it takes to create this beautiful world,” he shared. “And you got so many amazing people working on it. That from the actors, from Janine. Who’s ever from all of the writers, definitely the creator of the whole series to Bobs who’s running this show. This is 100% a Team effort. Honestly, I think I worked harder on this animated piece than any show that I’ve ever done.”

WondLa season 2 is now streaming on Apple TV+.
