Grief is a complicated emotion that makes us do complicated things, and Sacramento outlines those in a wacky, heartwarming roadtrip comedy. Its modest script is a vehicle for wonderful performances and thought-provoking scenes, proving that you don’t always need hefty scripts when you can connect with the emotions themselves.

Also starring Michael Cera as Glenn, a neurotic first-time expecting father, and Kristen Stewart as Rosie, his expecting wife, Sacramento is the story of Ricky (director/co-writer Michael Angarano), an impulsive and free-spirited man who convinces his estranged friend (Cera) to go on an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Of course, it doesn’t go well, but sometimes that’s for the best.

We caught up with real-life (and onscreen) couple Angarano and Maya Erskine to discuss the film, the ways it handles the many different forms of grief, and their experience working together.

You can also check out our review of the film here. Sacramento is one of those films that really presents how we are, at the end of the day, all so very human, and with very human experiences that unite us. On the surface things seem different, but the core of it is the same.

You can catch Sacramento in theaters now.
