The 1990s slasher boom was kicked off by Scream, and it seems like history is repeating itself with more reboots. Urban Legend is getting a reboot from Sony. According to THR, Shanrah Wakefield will write the script and Gary Dauberman will produce the film. Neal Moritz, one of the original producers of the 1998 film is also in negotiations to produce.
The original film was directed by Jamie Blanks and written by Sylvio Horta. It was set at a New England university that featured a killer whose kills were inspired by popular urban legends of the time. Some of them were quite inventive like consuming Pop Rocks and soda or the classic “Brights” urban legend about gang initiation and killing people that flash their high beams.
That original film had a pretty varied and strong cast of rising stars including Jaret Leto, Joshua Jackson, Alicia Witt, Michael Rosenbaum, Rebecca Gayheart, and Tara Reid. It made plenty of money at the box office and spawned two sequels.
