Screenwriter Hossein Amini has been tapped to rewrite the DC Studios film Clayface. The Wrap was first with the news that the Drive screenwriter would be writing a new draft of the film.
Mike Flanagan wrote the previous draft of the script. James Watkins is directing the film for DC Studios. It’ll be produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. It should begin production in October in the UK.
Clayface is known as one of Batman’s most interesting villains. He was originally introduced in the DC comics as Basil Karlo, a horror movie actor who went crazy. He gained the ability to shape-shift and transform his body into any form by turning into living clay.
The character’s last appearance was on the animated series Batman: The Caped Crusader. He was a staple of the Batman: The Animated Series from the 90s. That’s likely where most fans these days will know the character from.
Clayface will release on September 11, 2026.
Who Is Hossein Amini?

Hossein Amini is a screenwriter who has credits including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Drive, The Alienist, and 47 Ronin. We’ll have to see if the current rewrite keeps with the vibes that are expected from someone like Mike Flanagan.
DC Studios is currently in the push for marketing the upcoming Superman film that releases in July 2025.
