This week, Bad Idea’s PLANET DEATH hits local comic shops, and you are going to want to grab a copy. Created by blockbuster screenwriter Derek Kolstad (JOHN WICK motion picture franchise), New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti (SUPERMAN ‘78, GREEN LANTERN), visionary artist Tomás Giorello (STAR WARS, CONAN), and ten-time Eisner Award-winner Dave Stewart; this massive sci-fi comic book event starts with PLANET DEATH #0 that will get you ready for the 40-page prestige format PLANET DEATH #1 heading our way this July.

Planet Death

Millions of miles from home, hundreds of ships descend into the stormy atmosphere of a hostile frozen world. On board, an army of resolute men and women brace for the coming assault.

They are an invasion force, on an impossible mission — destroy the devastating enemy weapon garrisoned below. Corporal Scott and his battalion are in the vanguard, but the human forces are no match for their brutal alien adversaries. Scott’s battalion is dead within moments. He is its lone survivor. The landing force annihilated, the battle is lost.

Against overwhelming odds, Scott dares the unthinkable — cross behind enemy lines, survive the lethal landscape, evade capture by ruthless enemies, resist natural predators, face human deserters, and finish the mission single-handedly. Locked in his suit of full combat battle armor, sustained only by what he can carry, and driven by Earth’s wrath, Scott must do by himself what an entire army could not.

Destroy the weapon. Return home.

Planet Death #0 – The Review

First, I would like to thank Bad Idea for selecting me to receive a PDF review copy of DEATH PLANET #0 to review. For those that are new to my reviews,  I like to keep them short, simple, and as spoiler-free as I can. So, I am just going to start this review with this… DEATH PLANET #0 is a must-read for any sci-fi comic book fan. I now know why this comic is breaking records. This issue may only be the intro to the upcoming DEATH PLANET #1 issue, but don’t let it fool you. It will put you on the edge of your seat, making you want issue #1 even sooner.

Again, I don’t want to spoil too much, but I will say this… This story starts dark and gives you a MATRIX and STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES vibe. You will understand these references after the first few pages. Amazingly, we got so much story in just a few pages. Seriously, we got it all in these 24 pages, an amazing sci-fi story with a lot of action and suspense that makes you want more! The writers, Derek Kolstad and Robert Venditti, knocked this issue out of the park.

I haven’t even talked about the art yet! Tomas Giorello and Dave Stewart killed it! I could say that the art was good, but that wouldn’t do it justice. The art in PLANET DEATH #0 is some of the best work I have seen on comic pages in a while. The details on every page were amazing. From facial expressions to some of the smallest machine details, nothing was overlooked. Also, the use of colors to set the mood throughout the comic was perfect. They were able to give it a dark war torn look without taking away from the story. The lettering was also on point. It was easy to read and was not hard to follow. It made the story flow even better.

I know this is the first issue, but I have nothing bad to say about it at all. Do yourself a favor and pick DEATH PLANET #0 up on April 30th, you will not be disappointed! I cannot wait for the next issue. This could end up being one of the best sci-fi comic book stories out there.
