Witch Watch Ep. 3 “FRESH TRANSPARENT FASHIONS FOR SPRING / WITCH’S DELIVERY SERVICE / LOST DOGS AND THE PATTER OF RAIN” is the first episode to introduce a new main character to the anime. One who introduces some corvid-flavored chaos to the mix. However, before that, Nico inflicts her own brand of magical chaos on Morihito in the preceding vignettes.

Witch Watch Ep. 3 “FRESH TRANSPARENT FASHIONS FOR SPRING / WITCH’S DELIVERY SERVICE / LOST DOGS AND THE PATTER OF RAIN”: Synopsis

It’s about this episode where you realize that Nico…might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Alas, Witch Watch only recently began airing. In fact, Witch Watch Ep. 3 “FRESH TRANSPARENT FASHIONS FOR SPRING / WITCH’S DELIVERY SERVICE / LOST DOGS AND THE PATTER OF RAIN” only just premiered two days ago as of this writing. Thus, we shall be giving you the official synopsis of this episode from Crunchyroll to tease the story without too many spoilers below:

“When Nico and Morihito are relaxing at home, a package arrives from Nico’s mother, Ibuki.”

Nico in her Pikmin stage of life.

The story of Witch Watch Ep. 3 “FRESH TRANSPARENT FASHIONS FOR SPRING / WITCH’S DELIVERY SERVICE / LOST DOGS AND THE PATTER OF RAIN” is definitely the main reason why I’m watching this episode, as well as the anime as a whole. Mostly because of just how ridiculous it is as a comedy. The combination of Nico’s silly magic and her even more silly applications of it make for some wildly hilarious chaos.

All of which is enhanced by Morihito acting as the straight man the entire time. And yet, he’s not above it all either. He does some silly things of his own that also make me wonder if he’s on the autism spectrum at times. Honestly, it’s how Morihito and Nico just play off of each other for both comedy and heartfelt emotions that’s why I love Kenta Shinohara’s story here.

And interestingly, the animation in this episode is quite…creative. Of most note in this episode is the way Bibury Animation Studios and their animation team did the opening sequence here. They altered that opening so that it looks…half-finished. There’s incomplete animation everywhere, and there’s even a timer and scene number in the corners. All apparently designed to make the opening sequence look like they just rushed it out. How do we know that’s not actually the case? Because every once in a while, a fully animated Nico will pop in and attempt to fix the animation. With mixed results, mind you. I’m definitely applauding their creativity here, if nothing else.

Witch Watch Ep. 3 “FRESH TRANSPARENT FASHIONS FOR SPRING / WITCH’S DELIVERY SERVICE / LOST DOGS AND THE PATTER OF RAIN”: The Bad

Why is it that rain is usually a sign of bad things in an anime?

Alas, it’s the animation of Witch Watch Ep. 3 “FRESH TRANSPARENT FASHIONS FOR SPRING / WITCH’S DELIVERY SERVICE / LOST DOGS AND THE PATTER OF RAIN” that’s the weakest part about it. To be clear, it’s not that it’s bad animation. It’s actually fairly good for much of it. It’s just that it’s not particularly great animation due to some inconsistencies in it. Most notably, there is a scene of a letter stuck to a cardboard box with tape that…doesn’t quite look right. The letter is entirely 2D and unevenly drawn, with no shadow to it. The result is that the letter looks like a drawing someone drew onto the cardboard box. While technically it is, it’s not supposed to look like that. It’s weirdly low-quality bits like that which makes them stand out amidst the otherwise pretty good animation, and not in a good way.

As for action, there’s actually a surprising amount of it in this episode. However, it’s all a shonen-style bloodless action sequence, and a brief one at that. If you want bloody action, then might I suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaKaiju No. 8DDDDDAN DA DANSword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online IIZenshuSolo Leveling, and/or Black Butler? Those anime should have more than enough bloody action to satisfy your inner action junkie.
