There are many reasons why Witch Watch Ep. 2 “A Giant Rookie / Let’s Go to a Diner / The Flying Classroom” has such an absurdly long title. It’s all because Nico’s first day in school is just as absurd. It’s so absurd that it’s divided into a series of interconnected vignettes. All with Morihito getting caught in Nico’s magical chaos.

Witch Watch Ep. 2 “A Giant Rookie / Let’s Go to a Diner / The Flying Classroom”: Synopsis
Alas, Witch Watch only recently began airing. In fact, Witch Watch Ep. 2 “A Giant Rookie / Let’s Go to a Diner / The Flying Classroom” only just made its debut two days ago as of this writing. Thus, we shall be giving you the official synopsis of this episode from Crunchyroll to tease the story without too many spoilers below:
“Nico and Morihito enroll in Asunaro Private High School. Nico is pushed to hide the fact that she’s a witch.”
Witch Watch Ep. 2 “A Giant Rookie / Let’s Go to a Diner / The Flying Classroom”: The Good

The best part about Witch Watch Ep. 2 “A Giant Rookie / Let’s Go to a Diner / The Flying Classroom” is definitely the story. Mostly because, as the title implies, there’s so much of it. It’s mostly due to the format of this episode. The way it’s divided into a series of interconnected vignettes/skits makes it feel a lot longer than it actually is despite it being the length of a typical anime episode. This effectively stretches Nico’s and Morihito’s first day in high school out to an insane degree, and gives more room for the story to develop as a result.
However, I also have to give the animation from Bibury Animation Studios a mention. That animation has seen a bit of an improvement in quality in this episode compared to the premiere, in my opinion. It feels like an overall improvement in quality, with more details on characters, both major and minor. Likely because a lot of these seemingly minor new side characters are actually quite important to the main story. Some of them even end up becoming main characters. Regular readers of Kenta Shinohara’s manga will know who those will be, or even if you just pay attention to the opening and ending. The sudden animation shifts, mostly for comedic purposes, also help keep the episode feeling fresh and interesting, regardless of the quality.
Witch Watch Ep. 2 “A Giant Rookie / Let’s Go to a Diner / The Flying Classroom”: The Bad

Alas, despite the bump in quality, Witch Watch Ep. 2 “A Giant Rookie / Let’s Go to a Diner / The Flying Classroom” still suffers from that which afflicted this anime in the premiere: inconsistent animation quality. This is especially notable when you look at the scenery. which tends to be of noticeably lower quality than the characters and is often blurred out to boot. Most notably: all the glass in the episode doesn’t quite look like glass. They look more like walls painted light blue to vaguely simulate glass. It may be a small thing to save on animation costs, but it does result in an anime that doesn’t look quite as good as it should.
The other thing about this episode is that there’s not much in the way of bloody action. In fact, there’s no bloody action at all. The closest we get is an almost accident involving a truck, and that’s it. Alas, this is not that kind of anime. If you want to watch an anime with bloody action, then might I suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Kaiju No. 8, DDDD, DAN DA DAN, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II, Zenshu, Solo Leveling, and/or Black Butler? Those anime should have more than enough action and/or blood to satisfy your inner action junkie.
