Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- Ep. 25 “On to the Next Target” marks the finale of the second season of this anime. Alas, it’s a finale that begins and ends with curbstomp after curbstomp. Such things might be entertaining as an opening act, but by this point, it feels more boring than anything else.

Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- Ep. 25 “On to the Next Target”: Synopsis

Now if only the story and action lived up to the animation quality.

Alas, this second season of Solo Leveling has only just come to an end. In fact, Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- Ep. 25 “On to the Next Target” only just made its debut three days ago as of this writing. Thus, I shall give you the official synopsis from Crunchyroll in place of a spoiler-filled plot summary. You can check synopsis that out below:

“After no shortage of hardship, the 4th Jeju Island raid comes to a close. But for Jinwoo, the hunt never ends.”

The one morally good thing he’s done in this finale so far…and was it really?

Despite my issues with the action in Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- Ep. 25 “On to the Next Target”, it’s still by far the best thing about this finale episode. Mostly because the fight scenes still look quite gorgeous. Credit where credit is due, A-1 Pictures’ animation team continues to produce a very good-looking anime. With a combination of highly detailed animations, very good lighting and reflections, and fluid action sequences (more or less); they manage to make the action look amazing. All regardless of the quality of the action itself, which is the real thing that I have issues with.

Oh, and the music certainly helps sell the action sequences. Hiroyuki Sawano has done an amazing job with the music throughout the entire anime, not just in this finale episode. If nothing else, you can turn off your brain and just groove to the action. Now with that said…

Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- Ep. 25 “On to the Next Target”: The Bad

Alas, curbstomping is cool only once or twice.

Alas, the action sequences that are the strongest parts of Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- Ep. 25 “On to the Next Target” are also one of its weakest points. They have nowhere near the intensity of the earlier action sequences all because it feels like there’s no stakes in them. Jin-woo just easily crushes all the enemies in this finale, and in the previous episode too. At no point does it ever feel like Jin-woo is in any danger. He’s just crushing bugs (literally in this case), and as a result, there’s no struggle to his fights, and thus no tension.

A big part of this is because of the lack of meaningful characters in not just this finale, but the entire anime as well. Jin-woo feels like the only character who matters. Everyone else is insignificant, and frankly, they act in ways that really tests your suspension of disbelief. As an example: one character in this finale watched Jin-woo revive his dead friend as a newly undying servant, and his reaction feels a bit…flat. Maybe it’s because the poor guy is stunned and shocked, but I feel like he should be a bit more angry that his friend just got turned into a mute servant. Might be a case of your mileage may vary here.

Honestly, I feel like this anime overall is serviceable, but you will find better ways to get your action fix elsewhere. Might I suggest checking out  Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaKaiju No. 8DDDDDAN DA DANSword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online IIZenshu, and/or Blue Box if you want good action and good story?
