Kaiju No. 8 fans might be quite interested in seeing Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon when it hits theaters on April 13, 14, and 16, 2025. Yes, it’s basically an anime film recapping the entirety of the first season. Yes, you’re probably going to be a bit bored during much of its 119 minutes runtime. However, Crunchyroll is sweetening the deal by tacking on a bonus OVA at the end: “Hoshina’s Day Off”. Is it a cheap tactic to get people to watch this recap film? Well, you be the judge on that, and perhaps this synopsis of the OVA below can help you out with that:

“A day off… a rare day of peace for the Defense Force. After spending so long training, Reno has forgotten what he’s supposed to do with free time. He sees that Hoshina is up to something with his own day off, and decides to go on a mission to tail him with Iharu! But then things go in an unexpected direction…”

If you think that OVA is worth watching though, well, you’re in luck. Crunchyroll is proud to announce that tickets for the NA theatrical premiere of Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon are now on sale. In fact, you can purchase them right now directly from Fandango. The premiere will be in the original Japanese audio with English subtitles, and English dub. And as an additional bonus, Crunchyroll now has an official teaser trailer for this recap anime film. You can check out that teaser below:

A short teaser, but familiar to those who’ve watched the anime and read the manga.

Alas, we don’t get to see any hint of “Hoshina’s Day Off”. I’m pretty sure that’s what people are mainly going to watch Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon for. You know, since recap films aren’t that popular for a reason. I guess we will have to see if that OVA is worth it when this recap film makes its theatrical debut.

What do you all think? Is “Hoshina’s Day Off” worth watching an abbreviated version of the first season of Kaiju No. 8? Give us your thoughts below in the comments section.
