Blue Box Ep. 25 “Even So” marks the finale of the first season of this anime. As you might expect from the previous episode, this one deals with the wreck of the Hina ship that sunk then. Interestingly, it’s the way the story deals with that ship sinking in a way that blames neither party that marks this finale as one of the best episodes of the anime thus far.

Blue Box Ep. 25 “Even So”: Synopsis
Alas, even though Blue Box Ep. 25 “Even So” is the season finale episode, the anime as a whole only just recently ended. In fact, Blue Box Ep. 25 “Even So” only just made its debut four days ago as of this writing. Thus, I will present to you Netflix’s official synopsis for this episode instead of a spoiler-filled plot summary. You can read that synopsis below:
“Ayame faces the consequences of her meddling and tries all sorts of ways to console Hina. Meanwhile, Taiki strengthens his resolve and asks Chinatsu out.”
Blue Box Ep. 25 “Even So”: The Good

After watching this entire first season of the anime from start to finish, I can safely say that Blue Box Ep. 25 “Even So” has an amazing story. Starting by dealing with the fallout of the Hina ship sinking in a fiery blaze. Amazingly, Kouji Miura carefully wrote that story so that neither Taiki nor Hina are treated as the “villain” over the ship sinking. quite the contrary, both of them are treated with the utmost sympathy, both by the story and by the other characters. Neither of them are portrayed as having any fault over the breakup, especially since their proto-relationship kinda sorta never really began in the first place. It’s complicated, to be sure, but I do like how neither one are in the wrong.
I do also like how the sinking of the Hina ship is used to reinforce the Chinatsu ship. It does feel like the logical consequences of Taiki breaking up with Hina like this, since it steels his resolve to go out with Chinatsu. Alas, we don’t really see the results of this in this finale. However, it’s still a very important turning point that we’ll get to see in the second season.
Of course, all this story is complemented by the amazingly good animation from Telecom Animation Film and TMS Entertainment. As always, their animation team did an amazing job with this finale. If anything, I feel like the animation has actually improved for this finale. The lighting and overall quality has a noticeable jump even over previous episodes, and the brief bit of sports action we got features some very fluid animation. It feels like a great send-off before we get to see that second season.
Blue Box Ep. 25 “Even So”: The Bad

My biggest complaint about Blue Box Ep. 25 “Even So” is actually the way they left off on the story. The finale literally ends as Taiki and Chinatsu begin their first proper date together. Yes, I’m fully aware that cliffhangers are a thing, and that this most definitely counts as one. However, this is a particularly bad cliffhanger even by cliffhanger standards. We’re supposed to wait for the second season just to find out how their date goes, and we don’t even know when that second season will start? This is just agony.
Oh, and I do have a minor complaint about still images being used during Ayame and Hina’s day out. I am mollified by the fact that there likely wasn’t time to animate those sequences, so they just left them at still images. It’s such a minor issue that I’m only going to mention it, and that’s it.
Aside from that, action junkies might be left a bit unsatisfied by this finale. Yes, there is sports action, but it’s a brief practice session between Taiki and Haryu. If you want more action, then may I suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, Kaiju No. 8, DDDD, DAN DA DAN, and/or Zenshu? Those anime should have enough action to satisfy you until we get that eventual second season of Blue Box.
