When Ultraman: Rising started streaming on Netflix in June 14, 2024; it was a major hit. The combination of excellent animation quality, highly emotional story (starring an Ultraman caring for a baby kaiju, no less), and epic music made it one of the best Ultraman films in the Tsuburaya Productions franchise. Heck, I would argue that it might be one of the best films of 2024, really. A big part of that success came from the film’s directors: Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima. Both contributed their visions to the project, and resulted in a cinematic masterpiece being born.

In fact, one of those directors is the star of today’s story. Deadline reports that John Aoshima has just entered into a multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. Apparently, this deal is specifically a development deal in feature animation, in which Aoshima will “develop original and studio projects as Director in Development”. We don’t know exactly what projects he will work on, alas. However, given his work on Ultraman: Rising, we can expect many great things from him in the future.

Interestingly, the story isn’t over yet. While this deal is going on, John Aoshima has also just landed another deal with Netflix. This time, it’s for a role as a guest director for the upcoming second season of Blue Eye Samurai. Considering the critical acclaim that animated series got, this is a very coveted role indeed. We look forward to what Aoshima will do for creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green with great anticipation.

John Aoshima Scores Big with Both Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Netflix

Honestly, this sounds like a major series of success stories for John Aoshima. It would appear that co-directing Ultraman: Rising has paid off big time for him. Given how amazing that animated film was, I would say that it’s a very well-deserved success as well. Let’s hope Shannon Tindle gets a similar amount of success in the near-future.

What do you all think? Are you looking forward to what John Aoshima comes up with in Warner Bros. Pictures Animation or in Blue Eye Samurai? Are you perhaps disappointed that this story didn’t come with any news about a sequel to Ultraman: Rising? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
