Kosinski Still Holds Hope For Tron Legacy Sequel Film

In 1982 Kevin Flynn took us into the computer world and introduced us to Lightcycles and true ‘data disks’ in the movie called Tron. The movie became a cult classic, and it would be 28 years before it received its sequel Tron: Legacy. Its box office was fair but not what Disney hoped for. Legacy also now has a cult status and many hope for a third Tron Film. Legacy director Joseph Kosinski also holds hope for a Tron sequel.

Tron Legacy Sequel: Kosinki’s Thoughts

Kosinski recently talked with Comicbook.com about the possibilities of creating a third Tron film. He had the following to say:

“I think it’s possible and I think it’s worthy of it,” Kosinski continued. “I think there’s enough ideas in the franchise, and the fact that it is so unique and nothing else looks or sounds like it, that TRON story. There is, I think, a future for the franchise and I hope they keep making them.”

Tron definitely stands alone in the movie world. It has never been copied, and in fact would be very hard to do so without looking like a blatant copy. We see computers as software and data. Tron took those obscure ideas and turned them into a 3 dimensional world. The CG of the original broke visual grounds in so many ways back in 1982.

Tron Legacy Sequel: Where to Next?

The link between worlds was cut off in Tron: Legacy, and Quorra now lives in the real world despite being a digital creation (ISO). Where would the next film took place? In the real world of course! Here is what Krasinski had to say about the next film:

The movie was called, “TRON: Ascension”, I think that’s out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen.

So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a “Stranger in a Strange Land,” trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.

While it sounds fascinating, Kosinski would need to be very careful. The design and texture of the digital world is what makes Tron so special. Incorporating that into today’s world and the real world itself would be a tricky proposition. Kosinski still wants to do it, and reports are that stars Gerret Hudland and Olivia Wilde are on board.

Tron Legacy Sequel: Add Another Remake to the Line

Add Tron to the list. There seems to be a growing list of movies riding the bubble. Like Tron, power names like Warcraft, Alita, Power Rangers and more. These movies all failed to reach box office standards, but they all possessed marks worthy of giving them a second look. Studios need to decide if they merit the risk in today’s world.

There in lies the second problem. In today’s Corvid-19 world, movies are postponed to dates that interfere with other releases. Production schedules sit in limbo waiting to be restarted. Even when movies return to normal, how fast movie goers return also remains uncertain. A movie that normally generates $500 million may only make $200 million in these early days of ‘normalcy’.

Let’s hope Kosinski receives a green light soon. Until then look for his next movie, Top Gun: Maverick, December 23rd.
