Straight from the press release, Netflix strikes a landmark deal with the third largest comic book IP outside of Marvel and DC. If Netflix can’t get comic book shows out of Disney or Warner Bros. anymore, they’re going to their next best option. Boom! Studios is a major comic studio with thousands of titles for Netflix to pick from. The deal is a two-year first look contract for live-action and animated series.
A Fantastic Partnership For Boom! and Netflix
Netflix and Boom! Studios had this to say about the partnership.
BOOM! Studios, the publisher behind best-selling Eisner Award-winning and fan-beloved comic book franchises, including Lumberjanes, Something is Killing the Children, Once & Future, and Mouse Guard, has signed a two-year TV first look deal with Netflix for live action and animated series.
“BOOM! characters are innately special, they’re colorful, diverse and varied and their stories have the power to ignite something in all of us,” said Brian Wright, Vice President, Original Series at Netflix. “We can’t wait to bring these stories from the page to the screen to fans in every corner of the world.”
This isn’t the first time that Boom! Studios and Netflix have worked together though. They previously worked on The Unsound directed by David F. Sandberg, which is set for release this year. Netflix and Boom! have also had a relationship with their Dark Crystal reboot. Boom! made the graphic novel companion to that series.
If you’re looking for feature films out of this deal, you’re going to have to wait. Disney/21st Century Fox have the rights to films from the studio until 2021. This is huge news for fans of these comics and novels. We can only guess right now what Netflix will do with these series, but if their previous shows are any indication, they’ll be fantastic.
