Diego Luna has certainly seen his share of success in past several years. Earlier in 2020 he reprised his role of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Season 2 the critically acclaimed Netflix series Narcos: Mexico. It was his role as Captain Cassian Andor in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, however, that put the talented actor on the geek pop culture map. Luna is now set to return to the galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm has confirmed that the Cassian Andor spy thriller series will debut in 2021. The Mexican actor recently discussed the challenges of returning to the role.
Now remember: Cassian Andor, and all of the Rogue One crew, perished while delivering the Death Star plans to the Rebellion. In a live Q&A session with IndieWire on its Instagram account Thursday, Diego Luna discussed the particular difficulty of returning to the role under such circumstances.
“I think it’s a nice challenge,” says Diego Luna of returning to Star Wars.
… [I]t’s a good way to approach the show. What happens when you already know the ending? Everything is in how you tell the story, how many layers you can find, this can’t be a show where we surprise you, like ‘oh no it wasn’t him, he didn’t die.'”
Now Diego Luna and Lucasfilm must further develop a character with whom we’re already familiar. If there ever was a perfect character with whom to undertake such an endeavor, though, it’s Cassian Andor.
In his first scene in Rogue One, Andor commits murder in order to escape with information critical to the Rebellion. Perhaps in the show we’ll get to see how Andor reached that point of muddled morality:
[Y]ou can’t use the same storylines people are used to, now we start with a character that people already know what he’s capable of.”
One thing we do know is that Diego Luna won’t be alone. Alan Tudyk reprises his role as the cynical and sarcastic K-2SO. We learned how the duo came together in the Marvel one-off comic Cassian & K-2SO. We’re hoping the series dives deeper into that relationship, as well.
Cassian Andor arrives on Disney+ in 2021.
