The sequel trilogy of the film franchise Star Wars, created by George Lucas, saw many cameos. In fact, lots of celebrities found their way into the films. That included some who had not previously been part of the galaxy far, far away. They appeared in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker…. And that’s besides the standalone stories of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
But What About Lucas Making Cameos?
At least in voice, Lucas did just that in The Rise of Skywalker. (He apparently did so in The Last Jedi and Rogue One too, according to CinemaBlend.)
When Lucasfilm released The Last Jedi in 2017, sound designer Matthew Wood said that Star Wars retired the famous Wilhelm scream. That’s the well-known sound that first occurred in the original Star Wars. Many other films have used the sound after that. Notwithstanding, Wood said that they started using a new scream sound effect in Rogue One. (Wood did not say at what point we could here the scream in that film, The Last Jedi, or The Rise of Skywalker, for that matter.) Speaking with ABC News about the scream’s use in the film, Wood and Rise of Skywalker sound designer David Acord said that the scream is Lucas’ voice.
This apparently suggests that Lucas recorded the scream in 1973 for American Graffiti. Wood at first said that “other movies” that were not Star Wars utilized the scream, but didn’t specify which. Wood called the scream a Star Wars “calling card.” In February, 2018 Wood indicated that that they’d nicknamed the scream simply “The George.”
So many of us get so much happiness from Star Wars. We have its creator in Lucas to thank. It’s good to see some of that thank you from Star Wars filmmakers in the form of using the scream.
