Spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season one finale.
Episode eight of The Mandalorian has come and gone, and wow… what an ending. No doubt season two will be chock full of fun moments Star Wars fans will remember, recognize and love. Rumors have been floating from Star Wars insiders close to Deadline (whomever they may be) that season two would have lots of Skywalker saga cameos and references. Then along comes Jon Favreau and confirms a small part of the rumor with this Twitter post:
The Gamorrean Guard was featured in 1983’s Return of the Jedi as Jabba the Hutt’s palace guards and enforcers. Dressed more like a gladiator it looks battle tested with a broken horn and scars. After seeing his turn with the Mudhorn, it’s probably a safe bet we’ll see The Mandalorian facing this guy, or maybe a couple of them. Disney Plus is about to get real exciting.
The Mandalorian: Where Season One Left Us
The Darksaber.
Legendary blade of Mandalore and symbol of leadership to the Mandalorian people.
Created by the first Mandalorian to ever become a Jedi, Tarre Vizsla. After his death, members of the Vizsla clan stole the saber from the Jedi temple during the fall of the Old Republic. Eventually it found it’s way to Pre Vizsla of the Death Watch.
Many Jedi have faced it, including Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka. Darth Sidious faced it, too, in the hands of Darth Maul. The witches of Dathomir held it for a time. Other owners have included Maul, Kanan Jarrus, and Sabine Wren. The last time we saw it, Sabine handed it over to Bo-Katan Kryze, making her the rightful leader of their people. Now, Moff Gideon is using it to slice his way out of his crashed TIE, literally bringing Rebels and Clone Wars reference right to the forefront of The Mandalorian. This blade has more history than Anakin’s saber through the sequel trilogy.
This reeks of Dave Filoni’s influence, and it smells grand, indeed. Wouldn’t that be something if our Mandalorian, Din Djaren either became the new leader of the Mandalorian people by claiming the saber, or now that he’s charged with training Baby Yoda in the ways of Mandalore, that our little green ball of cuteness becomes the wielder of the Darksaber. He is force-sensitive after all.
Familiar Cameos are rumored for Season Two
Favreau’s tweet above is the only confirmation of anything. However, the introduction of the Darksaber leads to several implications. Picture it: Djaren needs to find Baby Yoda’s mysterious origin and return him to his people. No one is left, really, that knows anything about anything. Obi-Wan is dead. Yoda is dead. Who is left that might be able to help him figure it out? Luke Skywalker, that’s who. Obviously Mark Hamill is not the right age to play the role at this point in the timeline, but Sebastian Stan looks an awful lot like a younger Luke Skywalker, and he’s the right age to do it. Plus, he’s just next door at The House of Ideas, filming Marvel’s Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Surely they could steal him for a couple cameos.
Emily Swallow’s character, simply known as The Armorer, hinted at the Jedi connection, and insiders cited by Deadline say “several established characters” from the Skywalker saga will show up in The Mandalorian, season two. This could mean Ahsoka, or perhaps Boba Fett (since everyone seems to want that). With Favreau’s hint above, the Hutts are bound to show up. There is a whole lot of loose ends left to wrap up from season one. The sky is the limit here.
