Deadline is reporting that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss the two men who launched Game of Thrones are exiting their Star Wars trilogy. The two had a planned trilogy in place for Lucasfilm starting in 2022. Stating that their schedules are too full up to do justice for the films that were planned.

“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

Benioff and Weiss’s Statement About Leaving the Project

The two were supposed to be the next in line for a Star Wars film after Rise of the Skywalker releases in December. Hopefully this doesn’t leave a gaping hole in the Star Wars plans for Disney. They do have some upcoming projects to worry about though. The Mandalorian releases with Disney+ on November 12th. The Ewan McGregor led Obi-Wan series is set to begin shooting in 2020. So hopefully there isn’t a shortage of content.

“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

What This Means Going Forward for Star Wars

The two writers were collectively panned for their final season of Game of Thrones from fans of that show. The deal they signed in February of 2018 brought on some good feelings however. They know how to build a world and the characters in it, so them taking on Star Wars would have been exciting. The duo’s deal with Netflix was apparently what brought upon the end of the deal.

Some Star Wars fans might not want to hear this. There is hope for others to step in and fill this void left by the two writers. Kevin Feige and Rian Johnson have been two that are linked to other films or properties in the Star Wars universe. One controversial with his interpretation of Star Wars and the other the leader of the MCU for so many years.
