November 15th will be a great day for Star Wars gamers. Jedi: Fallen Order comes out that day, and just this week we got a new game play trailer reveal. This game looks amazing and we can’t wait to get our hands on it. First, let’s take a look at the new trailer, titled “Cal’s Mission”.
Jedi: Fallen Order – Cal meets Second Sister, and then his new friends
The opening cut scene gives us Cal evading an explosion and a ship, called Stinger Mantis coming to his aid. Hot on his heels is what so far appears to be the main adversary, Second Sister. Cal barely escapes, seeing her nearly slash open the hull door after Cere Junda squeezes off a few blaster bolts and closes it up. This looks to be the first time Cal faces Second Sister, and the first time he meets any of our supporting cast. Junda and Stinger Mantis pilot Greez Dritus calm him down, then it takes us to a swampy-looking planet where Junda convinces Cal to join up with their cause.
An ancient Jedi temple
The next scene has Cal using the Force to open the door on what appears to be an ancient Jedi temple on an unknown planet. It’s hard to tell if this is a cut scene, because the next clip is game play but the two are seamless. Eagle-eared fans say they hear Vader’s iconic breathing in the background, but it’s unclear if it’s that or just an ambient sound within the temple. Second Sister’s voice cuts in and says:
“He’s searching for something. Something very precious to the Empire.”
Second Sister
It’s not clear who she’s referring to in that quote. If that is Vader breathing in the background, she could be referring to his search for artifacts and relics. Vader, in canon and legends stories alike, is always seems to be searching for something. Death Star plans, Luke and Leia, the rebel base… the list goes on. The next clip shows us inside the temple with a puzzle-solving sequence, reminiscent of the Tomb Raider games. Then we have Cal dusting off something with a large Jedi symbol on it, so she may be simply referring to Cal. First, who does she refer to as seeking something? And more importantly, what is it?
Awesome game play sequences
Next is where we see again how Cal is going to feel at the controls. We get a quick shot of him eviscerating a pike-wielding Purge Trooper. Then another short cut scene of Cal agreeing to join Junda’s cause, and then on to navigation. Here we see what looks to be the main selection screen of how you’ll progress through the game. Four planets show on the screen, with Greez asking where we go to next. Following that looks like our first glimpse of a boss battle.
Cal vs. Gorgara the Chirodactyl
The Star Wars bestiary just grew a little bigger. That’s one big bat, and you don’t just fight it. It also appears you get to ride it! At least for a little while. It could just be part of the combat progression, but how cool is that!?! We get some footage of Cal dancing around Gorgara’s strikes into the ground with his massive wings. Something tells me he won’t be a one-shot kill…
Jedi: Fallen Order: A new “Sister” emerges…
The end of the trailer looks to take us back to what was happening at the start, with Cal running for his life through a myriad of blaster fire, collapsing decking, and facing off against Second Sister. Then it shows what seems to be a shake down scene, with the Empire lining up Cal’s fellow salvage workers. They’re probably looking for Cal, since he used his Force abilities to save another worker (as seen in the first trailer). In the background, we can hear Second Sister telling them:
“You cannot save them. Not from the Empire… not from the Dark Side… not from me.”
Second Sister
Likely Cal intervenes in this part, revealing his “I’m a Jedi” secret to the Second and Ninth Sisters and kicking off the whole shebang. Ninth Sister is a monster, and will likely make a good mini-boss fight. It’s obvious that we will see Second Sister throughout the game, so there may even be more of the eleven known Inquisitors showing up. Interesting side note: The line-up of salvage workers has one interesting snippet… the blue dude behind Cal. Could he be a Chiss? We’ve not really seen many of them in, well, anything. It’d be a cool tie-in to introduce their race. It could be just a Twi’lek with great tail-tucking skills, too.
Speculation: Who is the Second Sister?
Rebels fans will recognize the Inquisitors and know what they are capable of. Readers of the Vader comics will know them a little better. They’re Jedi hunters, trained by none other than Darth Vader himself. So where did he find these Inquisitors? He had to recruit them from somewhere.
We know that the Grand Inquisitor was once a Jedi Temple Guardian, and he had a small masked role in The Clone Wars. He was a guard during the trial of Ahsoka Tano for treason. He was in the escort guard of Barriss Offee, witnessing the trial and the accusations against the Jedi that Offee made. Her words planted the seeds of his turn to the Dark Side, so why not recruit her? It would not be surprising if we find the identity of Second Sister turns out to be former Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee.
If this is true, it will be interesting to see how they pull off Vader taking in the Padawan that basically got Ahsoka kicked out of the Jedi Order. If anything, Anakin/Vader is vengeful. It’s possible he might have just killed her. There is no canon resolution for her fate, so it remains to be seen.
Jedi: Fallen Order – Why fans should be excited
One of the best parts of this game so far will be the incredible enhanced graphics. While gamers know trailers are not always equal to in-game visuals, what we’ve seen so far makes it hard to tell the cut scene graphics from game play. That alone promises an immersive, cinema-like experience. Also, the timeline here is during one of the most tumultuous in Star Wars lore. Just after Order 66 and during the forming of the Empire is rich with stories just screaming to be told. Fallen Order has a lot of promise. Let’s hope it delivers.
