Technically speaking, the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon isn’t out yet. Oh, it has just had a screening at CinemaCon today on April 2, 2025. However, that’s basically a small private screening in front of a select audience at an exclusive film convention. It’s not anything to gauge the general theater-goer’s reactions by, in my honest opinion. That will have to wait for when this live-action film will make its NA theatrical debut on June 13, 2025.
However, it appears that even the exclusive screening at CinemaCon 2025 was wildly successful. Ridiculously so, it seems. In fact, according to Deadline, it’s so successful that director, screenplay writer, and producer Dean DeBlois has just announced at that very CinemaCon that Universal Pictures has just greenlit a sequel for How to Train Your Dragon. It doesn’t have a crew or cast yet. It doesn’t even have a title yet, even a tentative one. However, DeBlois has give us a release date for that prospective sequel of June 11, 2027. We will just have to wait for DeBlois and Universal Pictures to give us more details at a later date.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 Greenlit Before First Film is Even Out Yet

Am I the only one who thinks Universal Pictures and Dean DeBlois himself are counting their chickens (or dragons, in this case) before the eggs have hatched yet? I mean, yeah, some people have seen this live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon at CinemaCon 2025. However, it’s not quite the numbers for a general audience yet, in my opinion. We just don’t know what it’s like yet, and whether it’s good or bad. We can only hope that this greenlighting of the sequel means that this first film is going to be good. Maybe. Hopefully. Figners crossed, DreamWorks fans. We’re definitely going to need it.
What do you all think? Do you think Universal Pictures and Dean DeBlois have jumped the gun just a bit? Do you think this live-action How to Train Your Dragon will live up to its hype? Leave your opinions below in the comments section.
