Thunderbolts* is renaming Avengers Tower and fans are shocked. The former headquarters for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is now “Val’s Watchtower.” It’s a bold step for the franchise and one that some fans theorized last summer. But, the news has been confirmed by Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier.

Empire Magazine talked to the filmmaker about his big MCU team-up movie. He joked that fans know what significance Avengers Tower had. To have it fall into someone else’s clutches, especially Val’s, is something big for the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward.

“We know what that tower means,” Schreier teased. “Who’s the person you would least like to own that tower, that means so much to so many people? Can you use that as a symbol of things taking a darker turn?”

All of the marketing surrounding Thunderbolts* is heralding this film as a dramatic departure from the usual Marvel movie. Empire asked Florence Pugh what she thought this film brings to the table. Thee actress says that there’s a bit of a different tone with Thunderbolts*. People are going to be surprised.

Pugh laughed, “It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes.” The first trailers show that this description definitely fits the bill. Some of the recent promotion for Thunderbolts* bills the team as “Earth’s Fightiest Heroes.” Yeah, that moniker’s going to stick.

Director Jake Schreier noted that some of his previous work bled in. “There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different,” he said. “There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant, but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”
