I don’t think anyone expected 2018’s Venom to do as well as it did. The film was made with just a $100 Million budget. And it went on to gross a whopping $856 million worldwide by the end of it’s theatrical run. That total is everything Sony needed to know, because they ended up saying a Venom 2 is going to happen. But they will have to find a new director to replace Ruben Fleischer.
Per reports from both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is meeting with potential directors for the film. Variety is saying that Travis Knight, who directed Bumblebee, and Rupert Wyatt, who directed Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, are both in the running for the film.
Andy Serkis to direct Venom 2?
Meanwhile, THR is reporting that Andy Serkis is also in the mix for directing the sequel. He is known for playing Gollem in both The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit films. But he is also known as Ceasar in the Planet Of The Apes films. Comic book fans know him as Ulysses Klaue from Black Panther, and the Star Wars fans know him as Supreme Leader Snoke from The Last Jedi.
Serkis has also directed a bunch of projects. His most recent one was Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle for Netflix, which released late last year. He has shown that he can both act and direct.
Ideally, I can see Serkis directing this film and it would be interesting to see him direct this type of comic book movie, especially since the first Venom movie set up the arrival of Carnage.
