Did you know that Wonder Woman had been set to become a video game? I mean, it’s not hard to see why. The superheroine who goes by the alter ego of Diana Prince is one of the most popular DC characters in existence. It’s certainly not hard to imagine an action-adventure video game starring her. Indeed, that seemed to be what developer Monolith Productions (The Operative: No One Lives Forever, F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor) had been going for when they started development on this Wonder Woman video game in 2021. You can even see their official announcement trailer for the game below:
Alas, that trailer would be the only thing we would ever get of this Wonder Woman video game. Mostly because Monolith then spent the next 3 years+ trying to develop this game. Trying…and failing, leaving it to basically wallow in development hell for that time. To our best knowledge, there is no official word from them as to why this game has spent so long in development hell.
And alas, now we will never know, for Monolith themselves are now no more. Bloomberg has just come out with the news that they have canceled the Wonder Woman video game in its entirety. Not only that, but they have also dissolved Monolith Productions as a company along with Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. According to Warner Bros., their stated reason for the cancellation of this video game comes from a spokesperson for them, who said:
Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games.
This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them. We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions. As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.
Wonder Woman Video Game and Monolith Cancelled by Warner Bros.: What’s Next?
It’s unfortunate that we will never get to see what Monolith had planned for their stillborn video game. To this day, we don’t even have anything remotely resembling game footage to see that. Heck, the game still doesn’t even have a proper title. We’re just calling it the Wonder Woman video game for convenience’s sake. With so little details available, it’s impossible to even imagine what we missed out on. So alas, farewell Diana Prince in video game form. We hardly knew ye.
What do you all think? Are you angry at Warner Bros. for shutting down development of this Wonder Woman video game? Relieved that a potentially terrible game starring her doesn’t get to see the light of day? If you have any opinions on the subject, share your thoughts with us below in the comments section.
